Gateway Signage Request

The Corporation of the Town of Essex formalized their Gateway Signage Protocol Policy at their regular Council meeting of June 6, 2023.

The Corporation of the Town of Essex recognizes that gateway signage is symbolic and can increase public awareness of special events, current accomplishments, historical commemorations, and awareness of specific causes, and as such, is committed to the installation of gateway signage in  consistent and appropriate manner within the established protocol. For further details set out in in this policy, please contact our office for a copy.

This request application is the first step towards having your Gateway Signage, reviewed upon its receipt.

Request will be considered based on the following Criteria,

• Celebration of a 'current' Town of Essex individual or team Championship at the Provincial level which also complies with the below criteria:
  1. For junior level sports and above (e.g. junior, semi-pro, professional); and
  2. In one of the six listed major sports (hockey, soccer, baseball, basketball, football and figure skating). 
• Celebration of a Town of Essex 'current' individual or team Championships at the National or International level, affiliated with a recognized governing body,
• Recognition of a Town of Essex Charitable or Non-Profit Organization for accomplishment(s) and/or milestones,
• To raise Public Awareness of a Community Event and/or important cause,
• Celebration of an Organization that achieved National or International distinction or made a significant contribution to the community, or an organization that has helped to enhance the Town of Essex in a positive manner.

Please Note:

• Town of Essex Council has budgeted monies of $5,000 in 2023, which will be utilized until funding runs out. Once these funds have been utilized, the 'Individual', 'Organization', and/or 'Business' will be asked if they wish to proceed at their own expense.
• Sign graphic designs are the responsibility of the Individual, Organization and/or Business. 
• Final Gateway Sign design must be submitted to the Director for final approval.

The Town of Essex has a total of 14 Gateway signs throughout the entire municipality. These locations are 7 in the Essex/McGregor area and 7 in the Harrow Colchester area.
